There are many great benefits to making children memorize Bible verses. Memorizing something itself strengthens brain, and children may feel sense of accomplishment when they actually find themselves able to complete seemingly overwhelming task. Many adults fondly recall how verses they memorized in childhood help them stay grounded in faith in times of struggle as adults.
Let’s explore more deeply about how simple ritual of memorizing Bible verses prepare our children throughout their whole life ahead.
Most importantly, it instills biblical values and beliefs in them. To improve recalling, children practice saying the verses. They say repeatedly and they listen to themselves saying them repeatedly. This really helps ingrain biblical principles in their fresh brain which not only makes it easier for them to memorize better but also makes it very difficult to erase them later.
For example, here are a few Bible verses:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden”
“Love is patient, love is kind”
“God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son”
“You are fearfully and wonderfully made”
When our children repeated verbalize these verses, these values naturally become the core pillars of their belief system. It leads them to believe they are wonderfully made by God and their lives should be the light of the world. They will try to practice the love they believe and as critically, recognize the love that is not.
If we are fearful and anxious about uncontrollable influences that take over our kids’ thoughts, emotions, and their perspectives, this is what we CAN do to prepare them against those harmful forces.
Parents can help make verses even more deeply rooted. When chlidren memorize or read Bible verses, we can explain the meaning of certain verses, share our own favourite verses and why, and tell story of when the verses have helped us. I told my daughter the story of how I came up with her name; after reading the verse during pregnancy, I wanted my baby to become Jesus’ light in the world. This verse became much more special to her now and she memorized the verse instantly.
At bedtime, in car ride, or after dinner, this will be a great activity that can be done together as a family . This is one of those small habits that is an easy daily routine but will have an enormous impact with accumulation. Let’s start today, one verse at a time!
